The XI San Javier Jazz Festival We are so fortunate in this area to have an event the calibre of the San Javier festival which is capable of attracting world class artists and is so easy to get to. This year’s programme is no exception. Just take a look at the programme Tony Hadley appears on the opening night. The lead singer from Spandau Ballet is also a fine jazz singer and will be appearing in front of the Barcelona Jazz orchestra. Then there is Soul giant Isaac Hayes most famous for the theme to the movie ‘Shaft’. Friday 11th July sees Pedro Iturralde the well respected Spanish saxophonist on the stage with his band. His album ‘Flamenco Jazz’ in conjunction with Paco de Lucia is a landmark in jazz fusion. On the same bill are Manhattan Transfer who have graced the San Javier festival with their presence on a previous occasion. Jazz fusion group Spiro Gyra, a personal favourite of mine, appear on Saturday 12th and there is blues guitarist Gary Moore on Tuesday 15th July, Johnny Winter on the 18th and on Friday 25th July Ahmad Jamal who was a great influence on no less an artist than the late and very great Miles Davies. Robert Cray appears on Saturday 26th and the festival is rounded off by another legend, keyboard player Herbie Hancock an ex player with Miles Davies and another who has visited San Javier before. There is not space to do the artists justice it is truly a magnificent programme for lovers of good music. The setting of the festival is wonderful too and season tickets are available if you intend to see a lot of the shows although some performances are excluded from that arrangement. Guardamar Museum
Welcomes Visitors Guardamar Council recently announced its plans for regular weekly guided visits around its local museum. Part of a plan to enhance and extend the Town’s historical richness - Culture and Heritage Councillor, Antonio Puigcerver announced “We want to promote our museum – explain more fully the cultural heritage of the town and the importance of our superb local historical sites.” He continued, “Many of our visitors – and indeed our local residents - are unaware of the valuable resource that our museum is - and it is our intention to increase local awareness by offering these guided visits – both in Spanish and English’. The Guided Visits are organised every Wednesday in English from 11.30 am until 12.15 pm (45 minutes) and every Friday from 1.00 pm until 1.45 pm in Spanish and offer an opportunity to visit the displays and exhibited materials with an informative commentary to help you understand more fully the historical significance of the museum’s contents. The entrance fee for the Guided Visit is 1€ - and provides real value for money – with all of the monies raised going towards restoration work in the museum. Reservations for the Guided Visits of the Museum can be made by contacting the Tourist Information Office on 96 572 44 88 TOURIST TRAIN SUMMER TIMETABLE Locals and visitors to Guardamar’s Tourist Information Office are reminded that that the Summer Timetable is now in operation – and the town’s Guided Visits will now take place in the evenings. All visits depart from the Tourist Office on Fridays at 7pm in English and at 7 pm on Saturdays in Spanish. The Guided Visits last approximately two hours and take in the Medieval Castle, outstanding Islamic and Phoenician ruins as well as a visit to the Forestry Nursery – where you can find out more about the whole dune reforestation process. The Visit begins with an ‘in house’ DVD on the town’s history – lasting some 25 minutes – so all passengers need to arrive for the tour, half an hour prior to departure. The Guided Visit does involve some walking – so sensible footwear is recommended. All reservations and bookings are handled by the Tourist Information Office – and pre booking for selected dates is highly recommended. For more information and this - please contact Guardamar Tourist Information Office on 96 572 44 88 – who will be happy to explain how the Guided Visits work. |

Included in this evening of pure comedy, are five satirical songs composed specially for the show and performed to the strains of Danny Ray’s guitar and the unveiling of two brand new surprise features. Tickets are 12,50€ available from the Torrevieja Municipal Theatre ticket office which opens from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (except Mondays). English films at the Ozone cinema One of our regular readers and contributors Jenny Dodd has sent us some information about films being shown at the Ozone cinema Torrevieja in English. Apparently the films which are all the latest releases are identified on the publicity posters outside the cinema with the addition of (V.O) which stands for original version. The times of showing are also marked on the posters. At the box office ask for ‘auriculares’ - head phones and the film can be watched in English without subtitles. The Ozone cinema is near to the Habaneras shopping centre on the outskirts of Torrevieja. There have been showings of original films in English as part of the Cultural programme but these have all been ‘classics’ such as ‘Gone with the Wind’ and not the latest current releases which is what is being offered at the OZONE.
