San Miguel Golf Society at Villamartin 5th January Print E-mail

It was the day before the “Three Kings” and you’d swear the weather had been specially ordered, glorious sunshine and the mercury was on the up and up! Many were still feeling the after-effects of the festive season and from our more recent “Fun-day Sunday” at La Finca.

Layers of clothing started to be peeled off by all players and within a couple of holes it was down to the polo shirts with one nutter even being upset with himself for not bringing his shorts! Villamartin seem determined to keep all the tees back on their blocks which, after all, is their prerogative but a slight move one way or the other at regular intervals might help prevent the present similarity of the tee-boxes to mud-baths!

The unusual fairway grass which takes on its winter dormant state also tends to increase the course’s difficulty for us amateurs by producing extremely tight lies at those well-used areas. Having said all that – it’s still a crackin’ course.

NTP’s were awarded to Captain Ken (6), M.Freeman (9), A.Hughes (13) & D.Woods (17). The three special captain’s prizes for NTP in 3 shots went to D.Woods (7), P.Hagart (12) & M.Freeman (5). A healthy 31 points took the visitor’s prize for J.Mason.

The main Stableford winners in ascending order were: BRONZE – G.Smith (30), A.Hughes (33), N.Padmore (33 C/B) & J.Morris (36). SILVER – C.Holmwood (33), M.Birtwistle (33 C/B), P.Sabine (34) & P.Hagart with top score of the day by far! (41). GOLD – Captain Ken (31), M.Freeman (35), S.Fleet (36) & G.Rapley (36 C/B).

As usual we send a big thank-you to the team at Villamartin, we’ll see you all next month. Before that we have meetings at Lo Romero (medal), Alicante Golf and La Finca.

Anyone is more than welcome to join us for a game any Wednesday whether you wish to become a member or not. We’re a friendly bunch so even if you’re just here on holiday and you want to squeeze a game in, give us a call and we’ll do our best to oblige.
