Vistabella Friday 5th March
The cold weather returned for our March
outing to Vistabella with a stiff cold wind
making good scores thin on the ground.
However, a couple of seasoned
members managed to card decent scores
considering the conditions, “Well Done”.
After the round it was back to the
Clubhouse Clapton’s Bar. Chris served up a
welcome chilli and chips for the 38
members and guests. After we had all
thawed out the usual fines raised a record
45 euros and then it was on to the
presentation.
A special thanks must go to Alan
Venables (the treasurer) as he was without
his able assistant Phyllis. Not only did he
cope with all the green fees thrown his way
and settling the bill with Vistabella, but he
managed to card 30pts gaining 4th place
and didn’t have Phyllis to club him well
done Alan.
Results:
1st Simon Winston 34 points.
2nd John Stones 32 points.
3rd Chris Gridley 31 points.
4th Alan Venables 30 points.
Best Guest:
Mike Probert 32 points
Gnome prize (most golf) Ralph Weedon
Nearest the Pins 2nd Mick “The Grip”
Reeves,
6th & 15th Mike Probert.
Our next day out will be on Friday 2nd
April at La Marquesa. Anyone interested
in playing can add their name to the list
in Clapton’s Bar, Av de las Naciones,
Quesada. All guests will be very welcome

Vega Baja Premier Golf League
Champions
After seven long hard years of trying to
achieve their ultimate goal, Katie Reilly’s
Golf Society celebrated their first ever Vega
Baja Premier Golf League winning season
in fine style with three 4-0 whitewashes and
two other extremely good results to remain
undefeated throughout the entire season.
On paper the overall pairs match scores
of 16 wins, just three defeats and one tie,
plus 15 bonus points, seems convincing
enough but the truth is that, in virtually
every match, the overall result was very
much in doubt right up until the end.
At the penultimate match, against La
Manga South at La Finca in February, at one
stage on the front nine and around the turn
Katie’s team were behind in all four
matches and only gained the lead on the
back nine or towards the end of the round,
finally winning each for their 4-0 scoreline.
Six of the eight Katie Reilly players scored in
excess of 30 points, with the other two –
Ryan Boal and Damien Corvan – providing
more than adequate support, each with
scores of 29.
To prove the point still further, La
Manga South scored an impressive overall
total of 246 stableford points which would
have been sufficient to beat any of the
other teams in the League that day.
The previous match at Peraleja, before
Christmas, contained the only tied match in
the entire Premier Golf League season
which was in itself, a quite remarkable
game. Gavin Riddall had carried his captain,
Peter Deaves, all the way round the course
but even his swing failed on the 18th when
Gavin’s approach to the green found the
water. Peter, having had, by his own
admission, a nightmare of a round, then
somehow found the middle of the green
and amazingly sunk an eight foot plus putt
for his birdie, gaining sufficient points to
secure a 49-49 tie.
Not only did that result give an overall
match score of 2½-1½ but enabled the
team to pick up an extra bonus point,
highly crucial at that time in the race for the
leadership.
The final match, played at El Valle in
March, was marred by bad weather and on
the day only 5 players – out of 46 taking
part in three matches – managed scores in
excess of 30 points. And two of them were
in the same Katie Reilly pairing, Rob Neill
carding 34 while his partner Paul Rooney
got 33.
