There were some strange noises
and funny goings-on at The Hop Inn
recently, but luckily it was all in the
name of charity. Regulars at the La
Zenia bar joined forces to raise money for
cancer charity MABS by having various body parts waxed, shaved or their hair
sprayed psychedelic colours.
The fundraiser was the brainchild of landlords Nick Parrott and his brother
Ralph Anderson, who have a friend who is battling against cancer
Nick said: “We wanted to feel like we were doing something to help and this
seemed a good way to do something supportive. MABS do fantastic work in
helping those suffering from cancer and we hope 700 euros we aim to raise will
help them to help others.”
First in the chair was Mark Todd, who bravely – or foolishly – volunteered to
have his legs waxed, and from the look on his face it is not an experience he will
be repeating anytime soon. Just to keep it in the family, daughter Alice had her
hair sprayed in enough colours to make Jonny Rotten proud.
Next in line was landlord Nick, who customers had paid good money to see
put through the pain barrier. After relaxing head shave Nick, much to the
enjoyment of onlookers, had both eyebrows waxed. For those watching who
thought the leg waxing sounded painful, then the look on Nick’s face and the
odd expletive left them in no doubt as to what he was willing to endure for a
good cause. The bars kind-hearted customers soon got in the charity spirit and
were queuing for Anja and Eva to do their worst and there were soon locks falling
to the floor and smooth chested, headed and legged men lining the bar.
MABS co-ordinators Jill and Jean said: “This money is very much appreciated
by the Orihuela and Torrevieja branches of MABS. The donation will be put
towards everyday funding of some of the services we provide for those with
cancer. This could be, for example, translation services, hospital transport or free
disability equipment.”
MABS is a national charity with branches along
the Costa Blanca including Javea, Torrevieja,
Orihuela Costa and Murcia/Mar Menor |
