RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. It is a method of distributing content and allows site visitors, using RSS readers and news aggregators, to collect and monitor their favourite feeds (news/updates) in one centralised program or location without having to visit the actual website.

RSS is designed to provide content summaries of news, blogs, forums or website content. The feeds are generally simple headlines and brief descriptions and if the user is interested they can click on the title/headline to go to the website for any additional information.

Users select the RSS feeds (content) to which they wish to subscribe by clicking on a button or text link on a website. This button comes in a variety of designs but is usually orange (occasionally blue) with RSS or XML on it or, more usually, the symbol you see illustrating this page.

Internet Explorer 7 and the latest version of Firefox have inbuilt RSS readers as does Microsoft Outlook. There are also many (free and commercial) third-party programs which also do the job including those provided by Windows Live, Yahoo! and Google. If you want to use a separate program searching for "RSS Reader" in your favourite search engine will give you plenty to choose from. Take a look at Feedreader, Newzie and Attensa (for Windows and Mac users) which are all free to download and use.
