Aunty Virus
Well I had a somewhat excited response to my 'irresponsible' comments about switching from Apple MAC to PC and I could quite easily rant on about this subject for weeks, but I won't.
All I have got to say on the matter is this; VHS or Betamax??? Well I chose Sony's Betamax because it was superior to VHS but I ended up with an expensive machine no engineer would touch with a barge pole, and one lonely shelf in my local video library with a few Carry On films and a copy of Shaking Stevens Live at Grimsby Working Men's Club. For the most of us a computer should run all our favorite programs (including games) and be easily fixed when it goes wrong.

Mags via email asks;
Hi Aunty, I am trying to download avg free, going to the site you suggested and doing what you advised but it keeps asking me for an email address and on the next page which payment method I prefer, then going on to payment cards.
What am I doing wrong. I am now without security so please help.
Aunty Says;
This seems to be a common problem and it is because the free version is 7.5.4 and the $38.95 a year one is version 7.5.
You must make sure you are clicking on the correct link.

Joan from Quesada and an angry mob ask;
Hi Aunty Virus, I look forward to reading your page every week, so helpful as I am new to this wonderful world of electronics. I too have tried to sign up to ADSL but with Europa and although I was told I can get it in my area, after waiting for five weeks they tell me Telefonica have rejected Europa's application to put me on ADSL. My neighbour's have it and Europa can't see a problem, so why do you think Telefonica have rejected it, have any of your other readers come across this? Have you any ideas? The nice guy I deal with at Europa did tell me to write to Spanish Oftel and there is an English section but I'm not holding my breath!!! Best Wishes and keep up the good work.
Aunty Says;
Well Joan it seems you are suffering the same problem as many of us and that is an unacceptable quality of service from Telefonica. There is often no rhyme or reason to their conduct and I have repeatedly met with a 'couldn't care less' shrug of the shoulders. Well I checked out the link you sent and it does appear there is an independent watchdog for the communications industry here in Spain. So any of you with any kind of complaint regarding Telefonica, go here http://www.cmt.es/cmt_eng/index.htm and click on the email link. It is in English so I imagine they have a department to deal with the English speaking community.

Terry and Max and a load more of you ask;
Hi Aunty, Thanks for the gmail inviteits great. I have however encountered a problem which try as I may I cannot resolve - 4hours exploring every 'help' section available and no luck! The problem is that I cannot set 'Outlook 2003' to automatically retrieve messages from my Yahoo mail account via gmail or otherwise. Am I right in my understanding of gmail that I can use outlook to retrieve mail from multiple accounts (I currently have three including gmail) Can you help?
Aunty Says;
Outlook and Outlook Express can be set up to receive (and send) from multiple email accounts. The setup procedure is fairly straight forward so long as you get an understanding of the basics. I will use Gmail in this example. You must first setup and email account with an email provider, such as Goggle's' Gmail or Yahoo, which is normally done via their website. Once you have an email account you could simply go to www.gmail.com and send or retrieve emails via 'webmail' or you could use an email program local to your computer such as Outlook. Outlook needs to be told details of your email account(s) including the name of the 'incoming mail server' where your emails are stored (pop.gmail.com) and the 'outgoing mail server' that transports your email to its final destination (smtp.gmail.com). You will also need to provide a login name and password to access these servers, something like auntyv@gmail.com. Now because all email providers have different settings you must read their help or FAQ pages on their websites. I know Google/Gmail has some quirky settings which are very often overlooked so I will clarify them here. After you have setup a Gmail account you need to switch on the bit that allows you to download and send your emails using Outlook. This you will find under 'forwarding and pop' from the 'settings' link (in the top-right corner) after you've logged into Gmail.
Terry, I'm a little confused about where exactly you are going wrong but there are also couple of advanced settings that need to be changed and here I will refer you to the very good online help http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13278 as it is too complicated to go into detail.

Dominic from Torrevieja asks;
Hi aunty, I have an on-going problem trying to open attachments/pics. etc. with the following message sent by Windows 98SE everytime I try; 'Windows cannot find EXE FILE THE PROGRAM NEEDED FOR OPENING FILES OF TYPE JPG FILE'. What on earth does this mean and how do I overcome this problem, its driving me mad! Thanks for your interesting help letters, they inspire old PC users.
Aunty Says;
Ok Dominic this basically means Windows doesn't know what to do with a 'JPEG' type of file, the format most photos and pictures are stored as. I am not sure where you change this in Windows98 as it's been a while since I've used it but I guess it will be something like this;
1. In Windows Explorer (or My Computer), locate one of the jpg files.
2. Right-click the file, and then click 'Open With' (if 'Open With' is not an option, hold down the SHIFT key while right-clicking the file and 'Open With' should now be an option)
3. In the 'Open With' dialog box select Internet Explorer as the program that you want to use to open the jpg files.
4. Click to select the 'Always use this program to open these files' and click 'ok'.

Richard from Crevillente asks;
I just opened a Hotmail account because of the problems with terra, messages getting lost etc. but I find it slow to use. Is there a shortcut directly to the message page without having to go through the MSN Home page?
Aunty Says;
I'm not sure if accessing your Hotmail from www.hotmail.co.uk will make it any faster so I've taken the liberty of sending you a Gmail invite.

Dotty via email asks;
Hi aunty virus after a long holiday I came back to find 489 emails of very dubious content on my computer and I have been receiving them on a daily basis since. Can you tell me how I can take existing email addresses off and replace it with a new address? I know it's easy enough to create another email address but that still leaves the existing one receiving this junk. Hope you can help
Aunty Says;
Hi Dotty, In Outlook Express click on 'tools' from the top menu and select 'accounts'. You will see a small window appear and click on the 'mail' tab. Here you can remove, add or change you email account details. Good luck

That's me done for another week, keep those questions coming and I'll do my best to answer you. Email me at auntyv@gmail.com with your questions and requests for a Google Gmail email invite.
See you next week.

Whats the difference you might ask between an mp3 player an iPod?
Well basically nothing! The iPod is Apple's version of the mp3 player and why everyone is talking about them is that is aesthetically they look gorgeous and they are pretty easy to use. The only thing that really sets them apart is using the software that transfers music to them, called iTunes, but more on that later.

So you've bought your shiny new iPod, iPod Shuffle or iPod Nano and three weeks later you are still not bored with running you finger over the navigation wheel, or the big clicky circle in the middle for those that like the sound!
By now I´m sure you've worked out that they are pretty easy to navigate, so let go through the menu quickly.
But for those that are just magnetized by the clicky sound, here is how you navigate.
Running your finger clockwise round the central wheel will take you down the menu, and anticlockwise will take you back up the menu. Clicking the centre of the wheel selects what you have highlighted at that point on your screen. Touch the top and it will take you back a step. Now when you eventually have stopped playing with all the menus and get round to listening to music and you are on the "Now Playing" screen if you click the right hand side of the central circle it will change the display of the song that is currently playing. For instance you can have simply the artist information, or the album artwork and the artist information, or just the album artwork - have a play and see what suits you best. First menu, "Music" has 7 sub menus that the music you have transferred is categorised into, all listed alphabetically.
Firstly there is "Artists", which is all you music listed by artist information that is imported when transfer music. It can be slightly irritating if you are looking for artists that have the "The" prefix as you will need to go down to T in the menu and all are listed together, e.g. The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones - gripe number one! (You can change that when you are orgnasing iTunes to suit your needs).
Next menu is "Albums" and it lists all albums alphabetically. After that is "Songs" and again it is all songs you have imported listed alphabetically - be warned it can be a very long list". Then "Genres" - this simply a category you can put your artist/albums into and something that is chosen automatically when you import songs. The next on the menu is "Composers" and now I think you must be getting the gist. Lastly is search and here you can simply input the first or first few letters to search for what you are looking for. Now back to the top menu, after "Music" is "Photos", and here you can view any photos that you have imported into your iPod….you can even have a slideshow settings of all your photos. But if like me you have bought an iPod Nano then you will need some strong glasses to see them!
Back to the tope menu again and a little look at the "Extras" menu, which has the clock settings, for you to set your clock or even setup as new time zone. Games which I haven't really played with but has Solitaire on it, you'll have fun trying to co-ordinate moving the cards, I did! You have a "Contacts" section where you can store all your favourite people on it and synchronize it with Outlook -all good clean fun. "Calendar" which is much the same as a mobile phone calendar, you can set reminders, etc. "Stopwatch" speak for itself, and lastly "Notes" which if you have some burning inspiration whilst out jogging with your iPod you can write it down!
See you next week...
