FC Torrevieja Torrevieja FC - Torrevieja close in on league leaders
Dolores 0 FC Torrevieja 1
A tricky away game at local rivals Dolores was always going to take some winning and thanks to an early goal from Polanco it was enough to take the three points for The Salineros on Sunday and close the gap on league leaders Denia to four points. With Denia only managing a draw at Elche and third place Villareal B drawing away at bottom of the table Requena, Torrevieja's position in second place is still looking rock solid. There is still an eight point gap back to fourth place Ontinyent who beat Catarroja 3-0 and twelve points back to Burjassot in the all important fifth place.
Local derbies are always tricky encounters and Dolores always pull out a fair support for their home games and their artificial pitch will always favour them so it was to Torrevieja's credit that they came away with another important victory although they lost Nico in the first half to Injury.
The game began with Torrevieja taking control from the kick off putting together some nice passing movements as the home side struggled to gain possession. It only took ten minutes for De Meijide to put in a lovely through ball to Polanco who turned his defender inside the penalty area and fired the ball into the net to put the visitors in front. Torrevieja continued to force the pace with the midfield controlling the play, but on the quarter hour mark Nico was subjected to a tough tackle which saw the defender follow through and dump him on the surrounding gravel track, the result of which saw him being subbed out for Soriano on the right. With Dolores unable to keep up with Torrevieja's passing and moving they tried to slow the visitors down with a more physical approach, although their players were quick to hit the deck under the simplest of challenges from the visitors. There was no let up from Torrevieja after the re shuffle and it took a desperate clearance from a defender on the home sides goal line to thwart a superb Hector header from a Dominguez corner to keep out a rampant Salineros. Dolores tried to fight hard in midfield but Torrevieja were always one step ahead although the home side forced an excellent save from Ivan Vidal who was forced to tip a good effort over the bar as the half drew to a close. At half time things were certainly looking good for the visitors, although a second goal would certainly have allowed the fans to breathe more easily as despite controlling the play and looking in charge, the visitors were lacking at the business end of the pitch.
The second half began with Dolores in a far more positive mood and they gradually forced the visitors onto the ropes with Torrevieja's defence having to work hard to stay in the game. Ivan Vidal again proved why he is currently the top rated goal keeper in the Tercera with another commanding performance between the sticks.
Ivan caught and cleared everything thrown at him as Dolores pressed for the equaliser but with De Meijide in commanding form at the back, Torrevieja repelled the onslaught although the travelling supporters were given several anxious moments as a succession of last second tackles thwarted Dolores efforts. The home side were trying every trick in the book to try and gain the equaliser as the clock ran down and Torrevieja were forced to defend ever deeper but somehow they held on to gain a very hard fought and well deserved victory. As one would expect Dolores were a very hard team to beat at their ground and they were certainly up for the game as most teams are that play Torrevieja these days but full credit to the Torrevieja team who put up a resolute display to secure the points and for the sixth time in eight games the defence kept a clean sheet which is a superb performance from IvanVidal, Carlos, Higuera, De Meijide, Hector and co.
So three more points from another tough away game sees the play offs edging ever nearer for the Salineros. Next weekends game is at the Vicente Garcia on Sunday the 18th where the visitors are ninth place Catarroja who were thumped 3-0 by fourth place Ontinyent at the weekend. The kick off is 5.00 pm and full updated details are available at the official FC Torrevieja website.
