APAH (Asociacion Protectora de Animales Horadada)
exists for the rescuing and re-homing of abandoned, abused and neglected animals. Our Protectora Status means we can involve the police and the courts. We can only continue doing this with help in raising money. We desperately need volunteers to staff and donations of goods to sell in our shop and market stall. We need people to foster, and best of all to adopt those in need of a home.
Telephone 630 422 563 to feel like you've made a difference.

The Asociacion Española Contra el Cancer
known ‘A.E.C.C.’ or ‘Contra Cancer’, is an independent, self funding national charity.
The local branch at Torrevieja, is run by a mixed Spanish and British committee and is situated in Calle Torrevejenses Ausentes, 33, between the Queen Burger Bar and the Plaza Oriente. The primary objective is the prevention by early detection, of three cancers. These are breast, cervix and prostate cancer. The Association is also involved in awareness campaigns to prevent skin cancers as a result of over-exposure to the sun and lung and throat cancers caused through smoking.
To find out more about us or to make an appointment for screening, please visit the office, Wednesdays from 0900 to 1300. At the present time we have appointments available which cuts down waiting time.
The A.E.C.C. Torrevieja branch, is also involved in the running of a ‘Mobile Unit’, which is dedicated to caring for cancer related terminally ill patients, whilst at the same time, they are able to also give counselling to family members. The ‘Mobile Unit’, has three specialists on hand at all times and is available to all living in the Vega Baja region. This unit is controlled by the Domestic Palliative Care Unit of the new Torrevieja Hospital.
The funding of the unit is the responsibility of the A.E.C.C. and without the donations from so many very generous private individuals, clubs and societies, this would be an impossible task. Being able to treat the terminally ill in their own homes, not only gives more comfort, and the security to patients knowing they are close to their loved ones, it also releases bed space in the overloaded Spanish National Health Hospitals. Recent negotiations with the Spanish Health Authority has enabled trained volunteers to operate within the Oncology Wards, waiting rooms and Chemotherapy Department. Much needed personal help, comfort and attention is provided on a daily basis by a mix of English and Spanish speaking helpers.
Control of the movements of the volunteers is provided by a Psychologist who is also a retained volunteer of AECC and is located in an office allocated by the Hospital Administrator. The same patients who are the recipients of our team are later supervised by the “Domestic Palliative Care Unit” mentioned above in their own homes. This type of co-operation is unique to the AECC and is repeated in one form or another in over 100 hospitals in Spain For further information or to make or change appointments (Wednesday mornings only) please ring the office on 96 571 6679
